Full Moon Names/meanings

Full Moon Names and Their Meanings

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year. Here is the Farmers Almanac’s list of the full Moon names.

Full Wolf Moon – January Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Full Snow Moon – February Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February’s full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

Full Worm – March Moon As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

Full Pink Moon – April This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

Full Flower Moon – May In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon.

Full Strawberry Moon – June This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June . . . so the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry!

The Full Buck Moon – July July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month’s Moon was the Full Hay Moon.

Full Sturgeon Moon – August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Full Corn Moon – September This full moon’s name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon.

Full Harvest Moon – October This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.

Full Beaver Moon – November This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon – December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

Full Moon Scrying (Spell)

This came from the ever-amazing Pagan Magic.

Items Needed:

1 bright, shiny silver coin
1 small, black cauldron or scrying bowl filled with water

Perform this ritual outside where the rays of the Moon can fall directly onto the water in the cauldron. If you cannot go outside, stay in a darkened room near a window that the Moon shines through.

Place the coin in the water and take the cauldron in both hands.
Gaze up at the Moon and say:

“Lovely Lady of the night,
Mysteries old and futures bright,
Give me a glimpse of that to be
And as I will so mote it be.

Look down at the coin shimmering in the cauldron’s water.
With your eyes half closed, adjust your vision as if you were looking into and through the coin. Don’t try to analyse anything you might see or that might come into your mind. Just accept it. Some people, rathar than seeing actual pictures within the cauldron, will have mental impressions, feelings or pictures. When you have finished, bow to the Moon and say thank you.
Pour the water out on the ground.

Journal: I did it

Last night, I put out my moon water to recharge, as well as my bowl of crystals and my new necklace.
I brought out the moonwater first, stood with it in my hands facing the moon, and asked Goddess for blessings on it. Next I brought out my glass bowl of crystals with my necklace and money charm in it.
I held this up to the moon as well, asking for blessings.
Then I just stood there, offering myself.
The earth didn’t move, the world didn’t change.
At least, not the world around me.
I asked for blessings, for peace on my path. I asked for love and guidance and knowledge.
Something clicked inside me, a key turned in a lock and I felt open and connected.
When I went to bed, before I fell asleep, I saw myself involved in the Great Rite on a beach, under the watchful and loving moon, with a man inside a sacred circle.
The scene changed and I saw myself again in a scene with the same man.
I vibrated, I felt a connection and a presence…of the Goddess or the man, who is to say.
The man, however, was symbolic I believe. As evidenced by the Great Rite on the beach.
All this while awake, my dreams last night were insignificant.
Today I begin my service to the Goddess. I think I have given myself to her and the God. I think the images in my head confirmed that I am part of both.
I am blessed.

Moon phases: when to do what

This was found on the web and stated to be in public domain. If you wrote this, tell me and I will give you credit for it.

New Moon -  Age 0 to 1 days.
The moon is 0-45 degrees directly ahead of the sun, rises at dawn and sets at sunset.  Magic should be performed
between dawn and sunset.  A new moon's power may be embryonic, you can be assured that the power of
any spell cast at this time will continue to increase in power as time goes on.   Working with sun Goddesses such
as Sekhmet, Vesta & Heartha or the God Ra will increase power.   Work for self improvement, gardening,
careers, romance.
Waxing Crescent Moon - Age 1 to 5 days
The moon is 45 - 90 degrees ahead of the sun.   The crescent faces East the gates of rebirth.
The moon rises at mid-morning and sets after sunset.  The crescent's greatest strength is at the midpoint.
Work for animals, business, change, emotions, matriarchal strength.
First Quarter  - Age 6 to 7 days.
The Moon is 90-135 degrees ahead of the sun, rises at noon and sets at midnight.  Sunset is the prime
time for the waxing Moon.   From the time a new moon is sighted, until it reaches the height of it's power as a
full moon, the cycle is known as a waxing moon.  The lunar power constantly increases during this time,
and as such, it's an ideal time to cast a spell requiring the fulfilment of a request.   The waxing moonis for
constructive magic, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or health.
Waxing Gibbous Moon -  Age 8 to 14 days.
Moon is 135-180 degrees ahead of the sun.   This is a time for patience and for drawing up energy for the
 coming full moon.
Full Moon - Age 14 to 17.5 days.
The moon is 180-225 degrees ahead of the sun.   The moon rises at sunset and sets at dawn,
therefore a midnight working (or when the moon is directly overhead) is best.  Now the moon is at the height of its
strength - spells cast at this time are ideal for completion.  The Mother is represented by the full moon.
Prime time for rituals for prophecy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help
finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and
dreams.

Disseminating Moon - Age 17.5 to 21 days.
The moon rises at mid-evening and sets at mid-morning.  The time of the souls (3am) would be the midpoint here.
Banishing work starts now. Workings should focus upon addiction, decisions, divorce, emotions,
stress, protection.
Waning Moon (last Quarter) - Age  21 to 24.5 days.
The moon is 270-315 degrees ahead of the sun.  The crescent shape turns westward, to the realm of death.
The power of the moon is now waning, being drawn inside for later use.  Cast spells now requiring resolution
or for something to be concluded.   The waning moon is used for banishing magic, for ridding oneself of addictions,
 illness or negativity.
Dark of the Moon -  Age 24.5 to 28 days.
The moon is 315-360 degrees ahead of the sun.  The moon rises at 3 am and sets at mid-afternoon.
Around 10am is the strongest pull of the dark moon.   All the power of the moon is internalised,
the strength is at it's peak, but is being withheld for later use.  This is the time of the Crone.
Be cautious casting spells at this time as the power of the moon is strong yet unpredictable.
The dark moon is a time for dealing with attackers, for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our
angers and passions. Also bringing justice to bear.
Lunar Eclipses - There are two types of lunar eclipses, a partial eclipse and a penumbral eclipse of the moon.
Just about any type of working would be good now as the moon and the sun in perfect union.
Many Witches like to work with the Dark Goddess for long standing problems, while others lean toward the
 Shining Ones and fairy magic.

Moon Void of Course - The moon at this time is "between realms" when time is not time.
Do not do any magical workings during the Moon Void of Course.   In fact it is best to avoid making any
important decisions or workings during this time.   This is a time to relax.
The Sidhe Moon - is the second New Moon to occur in any one solar month.
The Sidhe moon is considered to be the reflection of the New Moon in The Otherworlds.
The Blue Moon - is the second Full Moon to occur in any one solar month.
The Blue moon is considered to be the reflection of the Full Moon in The Otherworlds.

Divination: So you want to find love?

There are many forms of divination, as noted here.

But if you are looking for love, whether to find the identity of your as-yet hidden true love, or to discover your current love’s true feelings…well, read on!

Paper Divination for love:

Write the name of three possible lovers on a three pieces of paper. Fold each paper twice and place them under your pillow at night. Without looking, immediately remove one slip of paper but don’t read it. When you wake up in the morning, remove another piece of paper. The remaining paper carries the name of your best choice of the three.

***

Apple Divination for love:

Cut an apple in half and count the seeds. An even number shows that you have a high chance of marriage. An odd number shows you do not. Beware because if a seed has been cut in half, your relationship might have some rocky areas.

*

At dusk, light a candle in front of a mirror. Brush your hair and eat an apple while looking in the mirror. Your lover’s face will appear behind you in the mirror.

*

Peel an apple so that the peeling is in one whole piece. Throw this over your shoulder. The peel will form the letter of the first name of your true love’s name.

*

Cut an apple in half. Eat the first half before midnight and the second half just as the clock turns to midnight. You will dream of your lover that night.

***

Moon Divination for love:

On the night of the new moon, go outside and point a dull-bladed silver knife at the moon. Say:

New moon, true morrow, be true now to me

That I ere the morrow my true love may see.

Place the knife under your pillow when you go to sleep and you will dream of your lover.

***

Pin Divination for Love:

Drop a pin into water. If it floats, you are loved.

Of Moon water and Writing with your left hand

A recent dream involved me having to write a story and having trouble coming up with an idea. I was stuck, frustrated, and bothered by the fact that for once…I didn’t have a thing to say! In the dream, I started writing with my left hand (I am right handed) and all the sudden the story flowed. Next part of the dream I was making moon water. This time instead of lavender, I put something lemony in it (possibly citronella but I am not 100% sure). It was supposed to help me bring more love into my life.
It was an interestng dream to say the least.
And of course, it got me to thinking. The dream was telling me to try the citronella (which grows like a maniac in my little garden!). So I will and I will see what happens. I know that using the lavender water I did some creepily accurate readings and remote viewings so I am excited to do more with the water!
*
Next, the dream spoke of thinking out of the box. In the dream, I couldn’t write in the normal way, so I had to write in an unconventional way (with my non-dominant hand) Given that there was a lot of psychic theme, I think that its a personal message to me that the channels are opening a little more, and will continue to do so if I think out of the box. IIn a global sense, the message was to use your other hand..think about things a different way…look with a different perspective.
Next time you are stuck on an issue, idea, creation, whatever…think with your other hand. Look at the situation as a different person, in a different light, at a different angle…maybe put yourself in another person’s place as you try to find your way around the situation. Different perspectives usually offer different solutions. Also, don’t be afraid to try something new.
I learned I can write with my left hand. Who knows what you might be able to do!
